How to Make Your Buffet the Focal Point of a Room

When decorating your home, each room needs a focal point. One thing or area should particularly grab your attention, so you are not confused about what the main show is in the room. Sometimes architectural features grab your attention; an ornate period fireplace, an inbuilt wall-to-wall bookcase for example. Other times, you need to create a focal point yourself. A gorgeous piece of furniture, such as a custom buffet, is ideal as a starting point to create a wonderful room feature.

Use the Wall as Background

The first step is to glance around the room and consider which wall will provide the best background canvas. Whichever wall you choose depends on the proportions and features of the particular room. If no outstanding architectural feature jumps out, the wall you first look at when you enter is usually a good choice.

When featuring the buffet, consider it within the context of the wall. A buffet is often relatively low, so to create maximum impact, hang a large mirror or artwork overhead. Choose decorative elements that complement its style. Is it elaborate and ornate, or sleek and modern for example?

The scale of the artwork and decorations should be balanced. A small painting overhanging a substantial buffet can look odd, but on the other hand, a gigantic painting can possibly dwarf it. Placing accent chairs on either side will emphasize it further and broaden the display. Another idea is to accent the wall by painting it several shades darker than the other walls, or else painting it a bold accent color.

Decorate the Buffet

When decorating the actual buffet surface, vertical decorations that contrast with the horizontal emphasis of a buffet will create drama. For example, tall candlesticks with candles, and a vase with a striking flower arrangement. Table runners and trays and other smaller decorations can complete the design.

Add Accent Lighting

Another option is accent lighting. Accent lighting is different from the general lighting in your home, or the functional task lighting needed for reading and bathroom mirrors etc. Accent lighting is purely decorative; small spotlights or colored lights are some options to create drama and highlight the main show.

Custom buffets make an ideal focal point for a room. While you want to avoid blandness, try not to overwhelm your beautiful centerpiece. If it is minimalist in design, try to replicate clean lines when creating a feature of it. Alternatively, an elaborate, ornate style should be mimicked, without going overboard.

Table and Chair: Protecting the Furniture in Your Home

Hi, my name is Gloria. Ever since I was a little girl, I have adored furniture in all its forms. I used to have a little dolls house which I would fill with miniature tables, chairs, dressers and wardrobes. As I got a little older, I started to help my grandma and grandpa to look after the furniture in their home. My grandparents had a lifetime of tips and tricks on how to choose the right furniture for a room and how to care for it. I decided to start this blog, so I can pass on some of this wisdom to others.
